Crafting Authenticity: The 6-Ton Boulder Counter at Ariko Cafe

How a Massive Stone Became the Heart of Ariko Cafe, Symbolizing Strength, Craftsmanship, and Connection to Nature

At Ariko Cafe, we knew that the boulder counter had to be more than just a piece of furniture — it had to embody the spirit of authenticity and craftsmanship that we pour into every scoop of gelato. The story of how this 6-ton stone found its way to the heart of our café is a tale of tradition, skill, and an unwavering commitment to creating something truly unique.

The Sourcing: Finding the Perfect Boulder

Our journey began with the search for the perfect boulder. We knew it had to be local, sourced from the rugged landscape of Hyderabad, specifically from the rocky areas of the Deccan Plateau. After scouting through numerous stones, we found the one. A massive boulder that stood out with its raw beauty and the right texture to represent the foundation of Ariko Cafe.

Once sourced, the next step was to slice the boulder to fit the design of our café — a task that could only be entrusted to skilled artisans who practice traditional stone-cutting techniques.

The Traditional Slicing Technique

The slicing of this enormous boulder was an intricate process, relying on a traditional technique that has been passed down through generations. Using simple yet precise tools — chisels, hammers, and nails — the artisans began by marking the boulder. Holes were drilled in a sequence along the natural lines of the stone, where nails were carefully placed.

Then came the delicate part: by hitting these nails in a precise rhythm, the artisans induced tension along the boulder’s grain. Slowly but surely, the stone responded to this careful dance of force, splitting into perfect slices as if it had been waiting for this moment all along. This method allowed the boulder to break into manageable pieces, each section retaining the natural texture and integrity of the original stone.

The Transport and Refining Process

Once the boulder was sliced into parts, it was transported to a local stone-cutting factory. There, skilled craftsmen worked on refining the surface of the stone, using specialized equipment to create a smooth, flat finish. Grooves were carved meticulously into the edges of the stone, which would later play a crucial role in its installation at Ariko Cafe.

The boulder wasn’t just going to sit on the ground. Our vision was to have it hover, giving the space a feeling of weightlessness despite the massive counter’s presence. This required a high level of precision, so we partnered with experts who use special chemicals designed for building bridges. These chemicals would ensure that the stone would not only be securely suspended in the air but would also maintain its natural beauty without the need for visible support.

The Installation: A Masterpiece in the Air

Installing the boulder was no small feat. More than 20 skilled laborers worked together to raise and place the stone into the café. Using a metal channel and special adhesives designed for large-scale construction, the stone was secured with pinpoint accuracy, hanging perfectly above the ground. The installation was a testament to teamwork and expertise — each groove and channel fit seamlessly, allowing the massive slab of stone to float effortlessly in the air.

To ensure its safety, the boulder counter was tested by having two people stand on it, confirming that it was not only aesthetically stunning but also structurally sound.

A Counter That Tells a Story

Today, the 6-ton boulder counter stands proudly in the center of Ariko Cafe. It’s more than just a place to serve gelato — it’s a symbol of the hard work, precision, and traditional craftsmanship that went into creating our space. Every time you place your hands on its smooth surface, you’re not just engaging with a counter; you’re connecting with a story — a story of nature, tradition, and innovation.

At Ariko Cafe, we believe in celebrating the beauty of natural materials and the skill of the artisans who shape them. The boulder counter is a testament to our commitment to authenticity and quality — much like the artisanal gelato we serve every day.
